Lord Jonathan Hill stated that the Midlands Showcase, which included a BMM15 Capsule expo with representation from a range of Midlands Maker businesses (listed below), stated that it was a testament to Birmingham’s innovation and creativity and that the innovators and inventors of the 18th century would be impressed by what we had pulled together to showcase as a collective, adding in a light hearted vein that University of Birmingham’s state-of-the-art Quantum Gravity scanner had a role in Brussels!.  Exhibitors present were representing the universities of Warwick, Aston, Birmingham, Birmingham City, along with the Catapult for High Value Manufacturing all coordinated by Birmingham City Council.

Lord Hill emphasised the importance of access to funding for innovative businesses looking to take new products and services to market stating that he was looking at new sources of funding and new opportunities for SME to list, adding that whilst he could not claim that Birmingham had Made him he could see it had made a staggering range of new designs and products.

Jerzy Buzek re-emphasised the Midlands inventions quoting Coalbrookdale as the home of the first castings, and referring to Malvern which enabled the first thermal imaging technologies, stating: “We need Birmingham and the West Midlands in the EU. It is everything about the dream. JRR TOlkein said ‘a single dream is more important than a thousand realities’ and Ozzy Osborne wrote a song called ‘Dreamer’. We needed the West Midlands for the first industrial revolution and we need it for the next one!” he concluded.

Sir Albert Bore, Leader, Birmingham City Council, thanked the universities for their collective effort and the HVA Catapult whilst singling out Birmingham Made Me for specific mention through our BMM15 Capsule Expo at the Parliament showcasing innovation, manufacturing and design in the Midlands.

“BMM showcases iconic products made in the Midlands. The Midlands is the true engine of growth in the UK. Heritage as the workshop of the world lives on across the great range of areas on display this evening. This exhibition illustrates the contribution of Birmingham and the Midlands to wealth creation and how research is being translated into real business,” commending those assembled to learn more about Birmingham’s track record in design and innovation.
